2025 field hockey season preview

GAMBIER, Ohio – Narrowly missing out on the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tournament in 2024, the Kenyon College field hockey team returns with a very different look for the upcoming 2025 campaign. The team graduated 10 seniors in May and the 2025 roster has just one senior. The young squad does, however, have enough talent to vie for a top-four spot in the conference race and reach its goal of getting back to postseason play.

2024 Review
The Owls posted a 10-6 overall record one season ago and that included a 6-4 mark in conference play, which placed the Owls fifth in the 11-team standings. The Owls started off with a 6-1 record, but ran into a rough patch of top conference contenders and dropped four of their next five games. Down the stretch, the team won three of its last four games, but fell two games short of claiming a top-four finish within conference competition.

Coaching Staff

Morgan Brozena remains at the helm of the program. She enters her fifth season at Kenyon and carries a four-year combined record of 43-26. Two of her past four teams made the NCAC postseason tournament. She's coached players who have combined for 18 all-conference awards, as well as two players who garnered All-Region accolades. Brozena's staff in 2025 included newcomer Ashlyn Norris, who will serve as an assistant coach, and Justine Cole, a 2024 graduate and four-year team member who will now serve as a part-time assistant.

NCAC Preseason Poll

The annual NCAC preseason coaches poll was released last week and the Owls were selected to finish fourth, receiving 69 points in the poll. Ohio Wesleyan University topped the poll with five first-place votes and 94 total points, while Denison University collected four first-place votes and 93 poll points. DePauw University picked up the other first-place vote and settled into third place with 79 points, just ahead of Kenyon.

Returning All-Conference Honorees

Kenyon had four all-conference honorees last year, but only half of those return for the schedule ahead. Junior Maren Lawrence, a forward, is a two-time All-NCAC pick. She was a third team selection in 2023 and then a second team selection last season. She's joined by sophomore Zady Hasse, a defensive midfielder. As a first-year, Hasse earned an All-NCAC third team nod in 2024.

Returning Statistical Leaders

On the offensive side of the field, Lawrence returns as the lineup's top goal-scoring threat. She ranked second on the team with a dozen goals in 2024, giving her a total of 21 goals over her first two years in Kenyon gear. Casey Master, a junior, like Lawrence, is the team's top returning assist leader, with four last season. She also had five goals in 2024 and ranked third on the team with 14 points. Defensively, Sofia Chaves, now a sophomore, is the team's only returning goalkeeper. She, however, logged just six minutes of playing time last season.
