James missed most of his sophomore season with a shoulder injury, but still managed to rack up 18 NCAA All-American awards. He was the 1971 and 1972 national champion in the 200-yard backstroke and the national runner-up in the same event the following two years. He won 17 conference titles and held varsity records in both backstroke events. He also set the national record in the 200 twice and capped off his career with an NCAA Scholar-Athlete award, as well as Kenyon's Falkenstine Award.
